Don’t Know what the Specialist’s Title Means?!

When finding the right treatment, you will likely see a number of acronyms following a specialist's name denoting their credentials. Below there is a comprehensive list of the types of titles you will see and what they mean. This can help you decide what kind of educational background you are most comfortable with.

Note: “L” at the beginning of a specialist’s credential denotes that the individual has completed licensure requirements.

Psychologist

PhD, PsyD, EdD with Dr.

Doctoral degree in psychology or related

MA, MS, LGPC, LCPC

Master’s Degree in psychology or related

Psychiatrist

MD, DO

Medical School training

Social Worker

MSW, LGSW, LCSW, LMSW, LCSW-C, LISW, LSW

Individuals who have completed a Master’s Degree in social work

Marriage & Family Therapist

MA, MFT, LMFT, LCMFT

Individuals who have completed a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy

pastoral counseling

MA, CCPT, CpastC, NCPC, NCCA

Individuals who have completed a Master’s Degree in Pastoral Counseling or Pastoral Therapy

Certified Peer Support Specialists

CPSS

Individuals who have completed a voluntary-based certification to supports others struggling with mental health, substance abuse and psychological trauma.
